Goals of This Class

• Explain how fairy tales changed over time.
• Be able to use historical context to critical examine modern interpretations/retellings of fairy tales.

Grade

• 20%: 3-page paper
  • Demonstrate your knowledge of how fairy tales changed from antiquity to the time of the Brothers Grimm.
• 40%: 6-8 page final paper
  • Analyze a modern adaptation of a Grimm fairy tale.
• 15%: writing your own short fairy tale (+ critical justification and interpretation)
• 25%: participation
  • Print and annotate readings for homework, then bring to class (no electronics).
  • Recommended to prepare 1-2 critical questions.
